We made this film to document our culture for future Hopi children and for all of our friends.

Maybe two or three will understand why our elders have tried to keep the true Hopi culture alive and the Hopi nation free from foreign control.

They have resisted foreign powers and their laws, because the divine law we follow never changes.

We believe Hopi life is good.

But since many of us have failed to listen to the wisdom of our leaders our way of life as Hopi is about to disappear.

Our late chief Kachongwa requested that this film be made.

At last we can fulfill his wish.

Here elders of our village tell what was handed down including prophecies and warnings of coming events.

They tell the history of the Hopi people, especially of Hotevilla village, why it was founded, and why we still resist the interference of white people we call Bahanna.

This influence is evident.

Soon we will have destroyed our way of life.

We speak our language less and less.

We are forgetting the meaning of our ceremonies.

Our world view has become so recklessly mixed with alien thinking from outside our culture that soon we won’t even know who we are.

We have failed to listen to the warnings and wisdom of our leaders.

We have created our own misfortune and downfall.

We are unhappy, children what kind of life awaits you?

What will happen to the land?

Your own experience will tell you whether the elders were right or wrong.

Think about it!

We had a beautiful life in a world below this one.

But we became careless and spoiled it.

The wisest knew of the guardian of this world, Maasaw, who lived at Oraibi.

They sent a bird to him as a messenger to ask permission for us to come up into his word.

He said we could come if we were willing to live humbly as he does.

Our elders have told this story through the ages:

We came from the underworld where corruption had made life impossible.

We failed to follow our original law.

Selfish desires guided our actions.

We lost our respect for women and our leaders.

All life was thrown off balance.

The few remaining wise people came together and decided to leave their corrupted world.

They had heard someone walking up above.

Their messenger bird learned that this was Maasaw.

whom he asked whether we could come.

Maasaw answered, “They may come, but I live simply.

All I have is my planting stick and seeds.

If they are willing to live as I do they are welcome here. “

We climbed up through a reed and emerged at the bottom of the Grand Canyon.

Through the Sipapuni we came onto this earth.

Here Maasaw was waiting for us.

To test our wisdom and truthfulness he put before our leaders several ears of corn then he asked them each to choose one.

Most of them greedily took the longest ears of corn.

Only a short one was left for the leader who waited to choose last.

He and his people were given the name HOPI.

Then Maasaw instructed us to migrate in all directions and build houses.

He said: ‘stay only long enough to grow and store food for the journey ahead.

Break your pottery when you leave.

Leave markings on the rocks as your land claim.

Build sacred shrines.

In this way the earth will receive spiritual roots, and you will hold the land together in balance.

All this will keep you aware of the true law. “

We finally completed our migrations in Oraibi.

There we met Maasaw again.

He gave us warnings and prophecies, and instructions on the pattern of Hopi life.

Different clans arrived from all directions.

As they each asked to be admitted into the village, they had to tell, what they could contribute to nourish the people and make them happy.

If they spoke boastfully they were rejected and told: “Go to the next mesa where your kind of people lives. “

Only humble people received permission to settle in Oraibi.

They belonged to various clans, each with knowledge and wisdom of its own.

Together we established our mother village Oraibi.

as a sacred shrine, and started our yearly cycle of ceremonies.

The cycle begins with the making of prayer feathers so all land and life may prosper.

This makes life beautiful.

We had plenty of food and were happy together.

At that time, everything was in balance.

We had rain, and flowers.

We loved each other and lived in peace.

No one was anxious about losing the land.

No thoughts about the Bahannas troubled us, since they were not here yet.

This changed suddenly when a Spanish missionary came.

He settled in Oraibi and started to convert us.

He controlled us and treated us like slaves.

He prohibited our yearly ceremonial cycle.

Then it stopped raining.

Starvation made us think of our original ways.

We decided to get rid of this Spaniard.

One of the clans accepted the task of killing him.

Then with our prayers it started raining again.

This restored our faith in the Hopi way.

We wanted never again to be led astray.

But again Bahanna came and destroyed our peace, this time known as the United States Government.

They wanted our children to go to their schools, to brainwash their minds.

At first all the villages refused to cooperate. “We have our own ways to teach our children. “

But the Government sent police to capture our men.

Every village chief gave in to this pressure, including Lololmai, leader of Oraibi.

He and his followers got the name “Friendlies”.

We who refused were called “Hostiles”.

Our refusal to abandon the Creator’s law and our ways brought a serious split among our people, which destroyed our harmony.

When we were banished from Oraibi in 1906, I was about this tall.

I am telling of my own experience.

We were evicted by our own people who cooperated with the government.

They were people of our village who came into our houses and threw us out.

They knew our leaders and caught them first.

They had no respect, and were very rough.

One of our men laid down as if glued to the ground.

They could not budge him.

They drove us all to the north side of the village.

There was a fight in which Kachongwa was knocked unconscious.

They even hit old people such as Yukiuma’s father, and tore their clothing to pieces.

Everyone known as “Hostile” was evicted.

They dragged them by the hair through the of the streets to the edge of the village where the women of the “Friendlies” were mocking,

“Ha, ha! Get out of here!

Go west! Be like the Navajos who never rest!

Don’t ever come back!

Since you don’t want Bahanna things, you don’t need to wear their shawls. “

And they took away any clothing that had come from white people.

All our women, and we children, were chased from our homes, and the doors were bolted.

We wanted to get food but they didn’t let us.

Without any supplies we were worried, but when we tried to get something we were chased away.

After some time, we were all forced to the edge of the village.

Yukiuma made a line with his foot in the sand.

Then he said:

“From here on all the land is under my care. You in Oraibi will only have the village. “

Then he stepped over the line, saying

“Thank you, now we can go without fear. This land will provide us with food. “

They drove us over the hill like sheep.

There our leaders gathered.

“Where shall we found our new village?”

“Over there at Hukovi?”

“No - this would mean we have to retaliate. “

So we decided to move further, to Hotevilla, but here was nothing there yet.

Only cedar trees. No houses or food. Nothing.

It was September and it was getting cold.

The leaders decided to stay there, and we began building shelters.

To get settled in Hotevilla.

We dug pits in protected places.

We used cedar branches for walls and roofs: this was our home for the winter.

We had no doors, only blankets.

It was a hard winter.

We remember it with this song:

‘sad we are poor things, chased from home out of the village.

Here we sing we are nothing.

There in Oraibi they are so cheerful.

To be rid of us makes them happy.

They laugh at us as they take to the Cross, because they depend on this source now for their support.

We sing only of what truly happened.

When they tell this story they twist it around.

They laugh at us outcasts. “

Even today, nobody in Oraibi will admit that the “Friendlies” betrayed the Hopi Way.

We chose to follow Yukiuma because he wishes to protect the land and our life as Hopi.

He became the leader of the “Hostiles”.

When Hotevilla was founded, he was acknowledged as our village chief.

He was truly faithful to the law the Hopi follow.

All the other villages accepted Bahanna culture, and were involved in banishing us from Oraibi.

I was twelve years old then, so I remember well how everything happened.

Here too, the troops came and chased us out.

They arrested our fathers and took them away to distant places.

The government tried to break our resistance.

They put our leaders into prisons, such as: Fort Wingates and Fort Huachuka,
the jail at the Indian Agency in Keams Canyon, even as far as Alcatraz prison in California.

Some were sent to school at Carlisle to be brainwashed into Bahanna thinking, and taught their system of values.

We all suffered much.

I have seen it and experienced it myself.

My own father put in irons!

Nasiwisima, who was there, tells it this way:

“As soon as we arrived in Keams Canyon, they threw us into a basement, six of us chained together.

They starved us for five days.

We got weak and started to see things.

Finally they fed us.

But then we got sick, and each time one had to run to the outhouse, all six had to come with him.

As soon as we regained our strength, they put us to hard labor, blasting rocks to make the highway.

We were lucky no one was hurt.

Every day they came by with papers saying, ‘sign them, then you can go home.”

But we refused to let them take our children away. “

My father was also against the school.

“You will learn a language with different meanings.

They will teach you their way to behave.

Our culture will become strange to you.

You will never understand Hopi and never know who you are. “

One morning the soldiers caught me.

They cut off my way of escape, the back door.

That’s how they kidnapped me.

I didn’t know where I was being taken.

It was to a boarding school in Phoenix.

I didn’t know English.

When we spoke our own language we were punished.

All this force by the Government made us suffer greatly.

They tried every means to break us.

Bahanna is indebted to us.

It is not wrong to resist our oppressors without using violence.

We suffered these prison terms, because we stood up for the land and our life.

But today everything has changed.

Our own people start to live by Bahanna ideas.

Don’t they see that Hopi life is good?

This land was given to us. It is not Bahanna’s land.

We can build houses without money.

Anyone can tend a field and feed the family.

We are self-sufficient and need no economic aid.

The people who later founded Bacabi village had come with us to Hotevilla at first.

Maybe they feared more force from the Government.

They tried to go back to Oraibi, but they were refused there.

So they searched for a place to settle.

First they went to Gray Spring, where they were raided by Navajos.

The same thing happened at Onion Spring.

Finally they settled at Reed Spring, or Bacabi, which is close to our village.

Like bats they fluttered to the Keams Canyon agency of the B.I.A. to ask Mr. Miller for help in building their village.

The superintendant said:

“Does Hotevilla agree that you settle so close by?

You recently left them.

Why do you settle in front of their noses?

This will cause trouble if Yukiuma is against it. “

The leader of Bacabi, Kewanimptewa, replied:

“Why should I ask them?

It’s my decision where I want my village. “‘so close?’” said Mr. Miller, “This isn’t right”

Do you intend trouble and want me to back you up?

I will not do this. “

“I only want material and tools, and will let you build a school.

And I want a pistol and a uniform so my people will respect me. “

“This will give me nothing but problems’ said Miller,

“I won’t support your lust for power. “

But Mr. Miller’s successor, Mr. Crane, gave him everything, including a school.

Kewanimptewa also wanted a church to be built, this lover of Castilians.

The school and the church were basic to his power.

Alliance with them brought modern developments as well as gifts for the people of his village.

The church was especially important in his scheme.

He promised that when it was completed he would proclaim from the rooftops:

“Get ready, my people. Dress up and follow me.

We all want to join the church, be baptized and pray to heaven! “

But when the church was finished, he did not join.

One day a lady said to him:

“Hey Kewanimptewa, it was your idea to have a church and all that comes with it.

I believed you and got baptized.

Now I expect it’s your turn. “

Did he get baptized?

No. He knew no one would follow him now.

The religious leaders had built a kiva and were celebrating the Hopi cycle again.

Kewanimptewa knew and had to admit what every Hopi knows: Bacabi has no land.

They allow the things of modern civilization to be built on our land without consent.

In this respect they are just like the Bahanna.

They take the land and say, “It’s ours. “

This is the law Bacabi follows now.

Their leader even tried to convert Yukiuma.

He knew it would be difficult to convince Hotevilla to change its life pattern to turn them into Bahanna there.

If we stray from the Creator’s law, we are no longer Hopi, and must lose our land.

The Hopi Way is as narrow as the blade of a knife.

It is up to us to keep our balance.

To let ourselves be seduced to either side would mean the end.

But so long as we follow our path faithfully, we hold land and life in balance for all and everyone.

This is the pattern we follow in Hotevilla.

No trick could induce Yukiuma to forsake it.

Kewanimptewa asked Tawaquaptewa of Oraibi:

“Would you help me make life miserable for them so they will be pressured into changing?”

“No, “ he said, “I gave them enough trouble, when I banished them from Oraibi.

I have tried in vain to convert Yukiuma and his people.

You will not make them stray from Hopi law. “

Yukiuma’s fundamental belief was well known.

Never would he drop the original law.

Never throw away this gift of divine wisdom.

No, never could he do that to forsake his beliefs and lose land and life.

Never he would do that.

He is truly a Hopi.

He is leading his people to keep this happy life in harmony with all living things.

A true Hopi must not deviate from this path.

Oraibi originally had all these instructions, and was supposed to follow and fulfill them.

All Hopi villages have forsaken the original laws except Hotevilla.

By doing this they have lost the right to be caretakers of the land.

They all know Hotevilla holds title to the land.

Bacabi has no land.

Nothing in our divine instructions tells us to give up our pattern of sovereign villages and elect a central government.

The so-called “Hopi Tribal Council “ is a puppet of the United States Government.

All who accept it become its instrument.

They deny Maasaw and his laws.

They deny that our elders are our true leaders.

By doing this they have lost the name Hopi.

Hotevilla has never accepted the “Hopi Tribal Council “ as its ruling body.

We have never elected anyone to serve this American institution.

We are not puppets.

We were instructed not to join any other religion or system or we would lose our land.

Yukiuma opposed the Tribal Council.

“Were we to become part of the system, we could never get out. “

The Tribal Council plays that role now: They have sold themselves, they have sold the land.

The programs of the Council are just like the programs of the US Government.

These witches of the East (Washington) have hatched up such a “Tribal Government” to use our own people to finish us off.

No true Hopi wants this to happen.

When the US Government urged our leaders to join the “Council “, they refused because they knew: the “Hopi Constitution” has nothing in common with the original Hopi law.

To accept it would mean to accept US laws and order.

We would lose our sovereignty.

Their laws and concepts of justice are not ours.

The law we follow never changes.

When the Bahanna plan things, they do it without regard for our way of life.

They never ask us whether we want it.

I am not afraid to tell the truth.

We asked and received permission to live here.

Before Bahanna knew of it we set our landmarks and organized our society.

But they came without permission.

They put up their flag and said: “This is our land. “

If this is what they call lawful or just, how can we trust them?

The law they used to form the Indian reservations shows what they mean by justice.

It was the beginning of our end.

They would allot a small portion of our own land, first to “Tribe”, then to individual families as “private property”.

This makes us dependent.

Then they ask for taxes, taxes, taxes.

No complaint would ever change that.

The Bahanna need taxes for their Governments to function.

First they deprive us of our land.

If we set foot on such “private property” they chase us off.

These poor settlers, they offer no food.

No place to sleep - just - a kick in the ass!

This is how most Bahanna treat us.

We did not invent their money and its rules.

We don’t want to “earn” our living as they do forced to buy everything we need for our life.

A katsina without rank am I coming to you with this song.

I see the land cut up and divided, and you, the people, fenced in.

I am sad to see this happen!

It will be like this from now on.

Let us sing to the clouds.

The crops need the rain and we need sweet melons.

Long ago it was foretold that you would no longer hunt together, or run in festive races.

Happy and satisfied after the feast, you forget to sing to the girls, and they have forgotten the sacred meaning of the butterfly hairdo.

Yesterday was a sad day for our village.

With the help of the B.I.A. the Progressives are putting in water lines and electricity.

I went to the boss of the workers and asked whether he had the consent of our elders.

“Yes, ‘said the Bahanna.

“I don’t believe you.

We don’t want to depend on the Government here, nor bow to their will.

I’m sure our elders don’t want this to happen. “

The Bahanna said nothing.

We told our opponents: “We don’t want a paved road. “

The B.I.A Agent spoke up:

“I follow a petition of 90 village people. It’s their right to have some comfort here. Now we can bring in everything. First the street, then waterlines, electricity and phones. “

He gave a sign to the machine to move.

It ran over two of our sacred shrines and destroyed them.

This was very mean.

They had no respect for anything sacred.

As soon as the fist pole was set, we said:

“Take it out! “

They replied: “You can draw up your own petition.

If you outnumber them, you can remove the poles yourselves. “

We asked the preacher:

“Are you the one who promoted all this?”

“No, “ he said,

“but I want the people to be happy. “

“Why did you collect all those signatures from “Hopis” who live in the cities?

They want the Bahanna life. That’s why they left.

We don’t want you preaching in our village.

Take your bible and look into it.

Where does it say“Thou shalt create disharmony among people?”

or “Thou shalt make your neighbor unhappy?”

The hole for the pole was ready when I got there.

We tried to prevent them from setting the pole.

A woman was injured.

The big truck was rolling towards us.

We were running in front and blocking its way.

The driver did not stop.

‘stop ! Stop ! Stop ! “ I shouted.

But he kept on rolling.

Some other ladies joined us.

We clung to the truck as he dragged us toward the hole.

I quickly got into the hole.

The workers shoveled dirt on me.

‘stop this! “, I shouted.

“No, I can’t stop. “

Then the pole fell down and I was hit on the head.

This is how they pass over our heads!

After this incident we asked their boss to tell his name.

He just walked away.

We know Bahanna’s laws too.

Contracting parties must be known to each other before an agreement can be legally binding.

Who got our agreement?

They don’t go by their own laws.

This Bahanna didn’t even tell his name.

What the Government tries to install in our village I do not want, nor do my people.

I went to protest against it.

The truck driver said: “You have nothing to say, You are not the chief. This is not your land. “

“The truth is, “ I replied, “we came to this land first.

It was entrusted to us as its caretakers. “

Here someone from the village interrupted me.

“You’d better shut up, self-proclaimed chief!

You have no power.

You’ve been deluded by these Bahanna who support you old traditionals. “

I told him, “It’s YOU who are deluded.

You live and think like a Bahanna.

You have abandoned the title to the land.

Hotevilla was founded so that we might follow what you call old fashioned Hopi laws.

We still do this for all land and life.

You have forsaken the original Hopi Way.

Like the people of Bacabi, you have no land and no power. “

As father of this village I am concerned.

I want my children to keep the good life.

I oppose these comforts, because they make us unhappy.

I know the outcome.

If we accept the Bahanna lifestyle, comfort will make us dependent.

These developments are from Washington.

Some day they will make us pay. What is the price?

I want my people to keep their land.

Then we can live a good, independent life.

New houses, running water, electricity, such programs are a sly way to trick us into an alien lifestyle with values opposed to ours.

I resist, not just to defend Hopi, but the land and life of the whole world, so it may continue.

If we are fortunate, someone will hear and understand this message:

Together with all nations we protect land and life and hold the world in balance.

In the words of our present village father, Lomahoyma of the Bear Clan:

“I am concerned.

The “Tribal Council “ is putting in modern things with the help of the Government and the Church.

They never got our permission.

The elders and the people don’t want this.

We want to have the simple Hopi life for which we established our village at Hotevilla.

The whole area was set as a sacred shrine.

We want to keep it that way.

Simply because we want to remain Hopi we have been imprisoned.

We still reject control by outside forces.

We must be allowed to rule ourselves in the Hopi Way, as we have from the first, as an independent nation.

We hope someone will see why and bring this out.

Otherwise Maasaw will be the last to do the job.

May the outcome be good !

We do not reject people because of skin color, All who come may eat with us.

We welcome everyone to our ceremonies.

In Hotevilla we keep the circle open to all.

The other villages have chosen Bahanna’s way of life.

They should have dropped their ceremonies.

Maybe they don’t have the courage to do this.

Now even the Hotevilla people are influenced by American ways.

Soon all the ceremonies will end here.

When the elders die, the knowledge will be gone.

Then whoever cares for land and life and tends the fields to feed the people,
will be recognized as our leader.

Our ceremonies are deeply connected with our tradition, history and everyday life.

They are a spiritual aspect of our culture that is difficult for outsiders to understand.

Each ceremony is set according to the position of the sun and the moon, to keep the natural forces in balance, and all living things in harmony.

We begin the yearly cycle in early winter.

We pray for a favorable climate everywhere, for abundant harvests for health and happiness, for peace among people around the world.

Our daily activities support these prayers.

Through the ceremonies all our actions become rooted in prayer and life is spiritually nourished.

Each individual creates harmony for all, so we can live together in beauty and joy.

Some of the ceremonies were dropped during the period of Spanish influence.

Others were stopped more recently, as a protection against improper use.

Here I tell the names of the ceremonies for our children.

I don’t explain anything about the ceremonies.

The following will give only a glimpse of the sight and sounds of traditional Hotevilla, The pictures do not show the complete ceremonial cycle.

Some of the ceremonies shown here are already gone.

Is it really going to be like this?

It is your duty to wake people up, bring them to their senses.

Crazy with greed, they distort sacred knowledge, confused and deluded, they chase after truth,
first here, then there, like herds of sheep.

Binded by false desires, they are led astray.

We must awaken from this madness, or perish.

Poor things!

Think about who you are and what you do!

Poor things!

The land is dry. Bring us some rain, so our crops will grow and mature, and the harvest will be abundant.

It will be a joy to share our meals.

If there should be a serious drought, the stores will be empty. We can’t depend on them.

So long as we raise our own food and store it up, we will be able to get through hard times; we must never forget why we pray for rain.

Maasaw entrusted the land to us.

We should follow his humble example, and live only with a planting stick and seeds.

Then the land will provide all we need.

Maasaw knew our ambition for wealth and power.

So he told us:

“If you don’t forget to live by my law, you will reach the goal of a Hopi life.

Care for the land, and it will care for you.

Then you will reach me at the end of your path.

We still expect the help of our True White Brother, who took one of our sacred stone tablets to the rising sun.
